Sometimes there is too much of a good thing!

Hubby decided this year that he would order me a birthday cake. (Usually, I'm the cake-orderer for the family, and I request a tasty little eight-inch cake that we three can tackle before it goes stale.) So he called in an order for chocolate cake with chocolate frosting, to be picked up at dinnertime.

When I saw the 12-inch cake, which is big enough to feed the entire blogosphere, my jaw dropped. And I had to ask him twice to cut the slice in half.

It sure is luscious, though -- and beautiful! (Thanks, hubby!)

I'm not a foodie, but while I'm on a culinary roll, I'll describe the fun meals I had to celebrate my birthday.

When I went out Monday night with the friend who gave me the certificate, we ate at Primavera Pizza Kitchen in Downingtown and I had an appetizer of shrimp and scallops ("grilled sea scallops and gulf shrimp in a cognac cream sauce with puff pastry"), followed by ravioli "filled with spinach and ricotta cheese, tossed with peas in a tomato cream sauce." Both were excellent. Then we had dessert (our waitress gave us a hard sell), with mine being double chocolate cake (I don't recommend this and didn't finish it) with a scoop of chocolate gelato (I do recommend this!).

Then hubby and I had quite a nice romantic birthday lunch at California Cafe in King of Prussia. I started out with a small cup of portobello mushroom soup with "tarragon crème fraiche" (superb!), and my main dish was lemon herb roasted chicken with "yukon potato purée, haricots verts, natural jus," which was decent. The restaurant's ambiance was perfect, and the waitress (on her first day!) was wonderfully attentive.

Hubby had his first experience with a "bento box," which I think of as an upscale TV dinner. The menu describes it: “Bento” literally translated means lunch box in Japan. Here, it’s a fast, fun way to sample four delectable dishes in one shiny lacquered box." The four dishes he sampled were: chicken and two shrimp with chopped tomato and onion with a dipping sauce; a salad with endive, romaine, plum tomatoes, and chopped carrots with a vinaigrette; seasoned sweet potato fries; and grilled zucchini, summer squash, onion, carrots and peas. He was quite impressed.

Now, I guess it's back to microwave meals (and cake!).

Sounds like you had a good birthday. Love those bento boxes. I'm trying to learn how to pack them for lunch...so many ideas; so little opportunity!

OK, now I see what it takes to get people posting around here -- a big-ass pic of fudgealicious chocolate cake!

I'm thinking if I post chocolate-dessert photos every day, I'll have as many readers as Kos and Dooce... :-)
