One More Wave

Driving home the other day, I saw a man watching his young son climb aboard the school bus. He stood there as his little boy, wearing a baseball cap and bookbag, vanished into the bus, and before the man turned away he gave his child one more wave.

Right away I liked the man. He hadn't made a quick stressed-out rush for his car; he had lingered over his goodbye in a way that made me feel he might also be up for bedtime stories and Saturday games of catch at the park.

It seems like so long since my son was his son's age. My boy is now almost 18, a senior in high school. He is becoming a man before my eyes.

The focus this year has been on college. We have been to many tours and "info sessions," he has spent many hours writing essays for college applications, and he has been through the rite of passage of SATs, ACTs, Subject Tests, and AP exams.

Still, it didn't seem truly real until the day I read the words, "Congratulations! I am delighted to inform you that you have been admitted to the [college's name] Class of 2014."

I burst into tears.

This was three months and one more college acceptance ago. In the coming weeks, he will hear from the other admissions offices, and then he will have a big choice to make.

I try to picture seeing my son off to his first day of college. We'll help carry his suitcases and boxes to his dorm room, stroll around the campus with him, and before we leave, we'll give him a good-luck hug and a kiss.

And one more wave.
