Yes, We Can!

"I'm asking you to believe. Not just in my ability to bring about real change in Washington ... I'm asking you to believe in yours." -- Sen. Barack Obama.

The 53 women and men who poured into the Collegeville Diner last night believe. Forty-nine of us had come to this Obama-campaign organizational meeting from the townships and boroughs in our part of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania; four more had come from various places including D.C. to show us the ropes. Some of us have campaign experience; some are brand-new to politics.

The energy and enthusiasm in the room were wonderful.

So was the professionalism and organization of the Obama campaign staff. We were all given signup sheets, Obama literature and bumper stickers as we came in, meeting agendas as we sat down, and as the meeting went on we were handed sheets on the new Collegeville office that opens Thursday (478 E. Main St., if you want to know), information on calling voters, canvassing (door-to-door voter contact) schedules, and even contribution forms for those so inclined. We were given time to talk with other attendees (which we did!), and later we were split into groups by municipality to do more local networking.

The event was set from 8 to 10 p.m., and sure enough the last of us were out the door at about 10. Kudos to the staff for a well-organized, well-run event!

Driving to the meeting on this clear, 70-degree evening, my depression (from more than seven years of George W. Bush) was lifting. And after the meeting, filled with smart, committed people who are willing to roll up their sleeves and help bring needed change to America, my optimism soared.

Yes, we can!
