"Great, Okay, Wonderful"

This is a theme day. Seems fitting to follow two posts about Intercourse with one on Eliot Spitzer.

Ever since I heard the news about Gov. Spitzer, I've been thinking of this dialogue from the first season of The West Wing, in which Sam confesses to having "accidentally slept with a prostitute."

Toby's response is, "I don’t understand. Did you trip over something?"

I'm with Toby on feeling like the whole thing is surreal. With all that this country has to deal with -- war, terrorism, crises in health care, the economy and education -- our government is wiretapping hookers.

The press is writing about hookers.

We're all reading and talking about hookers.

Don't misunderstand me. If I were Silda Spitzer, I'd dropkick Eliot into the Hudson, take my three teenage daughters and never look back. Anyone who treats his wife that way -- with his kids watching, no less -- deserves no more than that. I have no idea what the man was thinking.

Any public official who tries to keep a secret like this one leaves himself vulnerable to blackmail by anyone wanting to exercise influence over policy. It's particularly ironic that Spitzer's corruption-busting reputation has now boomeranged against him. Yes, he may need to resign.

But I can't help thinking: How come a governor can be taken down by sleeping with call girls when the President of the United States disregards the Constitution and basic human decency (see this ) and continues to rule the roost at the White House?

Let's keep our priorities straight. In the case of George W. Bush, unlike that of Eliot Spitzer, aren't we all being screwed?

As some like to point out (on the differences between our current commander-and-thief and the last one): what's worse, screwing an intern or screwing the country?

But the answer to your question is fairly simple - the majority of Americans now feel that the moral and ethical "crime" of a quick romp in trade for a few bucks is a greater crime than any high crimes or treason. No other way to explain that rationally, not that that's a rational point of view.

My son just read this and his comment is:

This country isn't being screwed, it's being raped!

(Well said! -- Mom.)
