My Diploma

"Back where I come from we have universities, seats of great learning -- where men go to become great thinkers. And when they come out, they think deep thoughts -- and with no more brains than you have.... But! They have one thing you haven't got! A diploma!" -- The Wizard of Oz.

There are diplomas for a lot of achievements, but none for motherhood.

Until now.

Today is my birthday, and last night I went out for dinner with a friend who has some childrearing challenges similar to mine. We talked recently on the phone about how moms whose kids have special needs just "get it" in a way that a typical soccer mom doesn't. We can talk to one another and be heard, sympathized with and not judged.

Anyway, my friend came to the restaurant carrying a pink file folder. The thought flashed through my mind, "She's bringing work to dinner?" But then we ordered our meals and started chatting, and I forgot about the folder.

Then, around the time we ordered dessert, she handed me the folder. And there it was, beautifully typed on one of those elegant certificate forms.

My diploma.

Here is what it said:

"This Certificate Hereby Awarded to
'One Who Gets It!'

Ms. Linda [last name]
On this date
February 26, 2008

In recognition of outstanding achievements
Above and beyond the usual and reasonable expectations
As a mother of a teen-aged son with extraordinary intellectual capabilities,
as well as [a particular challenge of his].

Presented this date from 'One who also gets it!'

Your dear and loving friend,
[friend's name]

Happy Birthday, Linda!"

I was, and am, thrilled and touched. Moms don't often get recognition and honor for our day-to-day efforts, but this time I did.

My life may not be different when I wake up tomorrow morning, but tonight as I type, I'm hearing the "Pomp and Circumstance" music playing in my head.
